Course Title
Anthropology of Surveillance
Course Description
People have long kept tabs on each other, but we are living in a moment where the capacity of people with various forms of power to collect information about and keep tabs on others is unprecedented. Using materials from anthropology, sociology, political science, technology studies, queer studies, legal studies, philosophy, and journalism, this class considers the scope of surveillance and the methods that are used to collect information about and track everyday people. It also examines how that constant surveillance, and the information gleaned from it, affects how we behave, think, and feel about ourselves and others. Prerequisites: ANTH-162 or SOCI-101 and sophomore standing. 4 SH. CC: Interdisciplinary, Writing Intensive.
