Course Title
Material Histories
Course Description
Instead of addressing art's subjects and styles, this course examines the raw materials behind historic works. Whether traded, harvested, or formulated in a laboratory, each artistic substance contains different physical attributes and cultural associations. By addressing the materiality of visual objects, students will leave the course with a more complete history of art. In addition to traditional lectures, students will complete hands-on workshops refining pigments, dyeing fibers, and recreating other historic processes. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. 4 SH. CC: Artistic Expression, Interdisciplinary.
