Course Title
Soccer & Modern History 1863 to the Pres
Course Description
This course traces the history of soccer from its codification by English gentlemen in a London pub in 1863 to its emergence as the world's reigning sport. Through lectures and collaborative discussions, students will examine how soccer, beyond the seemingly irrational passion sparked by twenty-two players chasing a ball for ninety minutes, serves as a compelling lens to explore the defining processes of modern history, including nationhood, migration, collective identity, gender inclusion, mass communication, power politics, and global inequality. 4 SH.
