Course Title
GO Tirolo
Course Description
This course explores the nuances of the 'border' concept, focusing on South Tyrol (Südrol / Tirolo), a borderland with a complex historic, ethnic, and linguistic identity. With two official languages (German and Italian), Tirolese citizens are suspended between two cultures while maintaining their own. Students will explore the concept of geographical, cultural, linguistic, and political borders. Students will live in the medieval Brunnenburg (Castel Fontana), where they will interact with the local population and participate in agricultural and culinary activities. Visits to Austrian and Italian urban spaces with more monocultural profiles than South Tyrol will aid in creating a contrast to South Tyrol's intersectional cultural identity. The reflection portion of this course will help students interpret their experience abroad and reorganize their understanding of citizenship, monoculturalism, monolingualism, geo-political borders, ethnocentrism, and personal vs. group identities.
