Course Title
African Voices on Slavery & Abolition
Course Description
This course explores the history of slavery and coerced labor in nineteenth-century Africa, broadening the lens beyond the more familiar contexts of North American and Caribbean plantation slavery. Central to the course is an emphasis on African voices. Drawing on the testimonies of enslaved individuals, and recent scholarly debates, students will consider how people in Africa navigated, negotiated, and resisted systems of exploitation. The course foregrounds the perspectives of the enslaved themselves, highlighting their roles as active agents who shaped the course of their own histories. Themes such as resistance, occupations, religion, and emancipation will be addressed. 4 SH.
